The article talks about how the zeitgeist of the 21st century is progressive businesses. This business model prioritizes social good over profit-making, which is the ethos of the classical business. Classical business focuses on profit-making, competition, creativity, and individualism. As the article mentions even if nowadays a lot of businesses are adopting this creed there should be some sort of skepticism. Additionally, the article discusses the various economists on both spectrums of the argument, which is classical and progressive. While a classical creed can be capitalist in nature and harmful, we should also remember that progressive business is not all good as well. If businesses start to fully adopt the progressive business model, then the possibility of progressive politics taking a back seat is high. The article gives an example of how if a company provides health insurance for their workers while the government is ignoring health for citizens all the pressure will be on businesses and that’s not good. It should not remove the fact that the government still has a role to play. I like the last paragraph, which mentions that progressive business is not a replacement for progressive politics. Overall, the classical creed is a guide for businesses as it stays away from social good and political involvement because there is a belief that business owners shouldn’t be involved in these things. While managerial/progressive argues that businesses do have a major role to play when it comes to society and social good and how that should be a priority over profit maximization.
